UW–Madison’s international engagement includes people, programs, partnerships, and activities across campus and around the world. The following frequently asked questions provide additional information about Global, Together and what it means for the university community.
The International Division led the development of this campus internationalization framework, which identifies four goals for advancing the global dimensions of teaching, research, and engagement at our public, land-grant institution. This internationalization framework is the first of its kind at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and it reflects insights from discussions with a wide range of stakeholders between December 2023 and April 2025. More than 300 students, staff, and faculty provided feedback during meetings that included deans and vice provosts, the Immigration and International Issues Shared Governance Committee, and the International Student Services Advisory Board.
Global, Together was developed to align closely with the campus strategic framework, Forward, Together. Together, they will help set priorities for campus as a whole and for individual units. As an institution committed to the Wisconsin Idea and education for the public good, these four interconnected goals reflect our values and vision for the university, state, nation, and world as we work together to address grand challenges and expand opportunities for international engagement among students, staff, faculty, and alumni.
While the International Division played an important role in developing Global, Together, this framework belongs to everyone. It is intended to elevate international engagement across campus, around the state, and with partners throughout the U.S. and the world. Through the efforts of schools, colleges, divisions, departments, and individual stakeholders, the goals and activities in this framework will bolster UW-Madison’s global reputation and create new opportunities to connect the university and state to the world.

Countries for the FCI were selected in consultation with campus partners and in response to priorities for enrollment, current and prospective partnerships, research, alumni engagement, and other factors. Selections for the FCI will be reassessed approximately every two years, with new countries identified with input from students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
